Forward from the Directors
"Offshoring opportunities in the pharmaceutical sector could double to roughly US$50b"

Welcome to our very first quarterly newsletter. This newsletter will reach our current client base and organisations which have either expressed an interest in or could benefit from our very competitive high performance chemistry services. We will provide you with exciting updates on O2H, thought provoking biotechnology news, and offbeat insights from the O2H frontline in India. At a time when Goldman Sachs predicts that offshoring opportunities in the pharmaceutical sector could double to roughly US$50b by 2007 and with the Bombay Stock Exchange providing its domestic pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies with sky high valuations, I think that you will find our quarterly dose of news a worth while one-minute read.

        O2H in focus
'Our vision is to be the best performing research chemistry company in the world.'

O2H has set-up a world-class laboratory and team in India, with its head office in Cambridge Science Park, UK. O2H has now built its team up to 30 people and is working with 10 clients around the world in UK, Sweden, Belgium and USA. "Our Indian base allows us to provide real value compared to other players in the West. Our vision is to be the best performing research chemistry company in the world and therefore you can expect that we have set ourselves the highest standards of performance in terms of quality of work, project facilitation and delivery timelines" says Sunil Shah, Director. O2H runs its laboratory 24hrs and the types of projects that O2H undertake are synthetic and medicinal chemistry, natural product extraction, route development and focused library generation.

        Client focus - SENEXIS
'the project was completed on-time in a cost effective manner.'
David Scopes is the CSO of Senexis Ltd and he was formerly the Head of Medicinal Chemistry at GlaxoWellcome in France and Vice-President of Drug Discovery at Oxford GlycoSciences. I decided to form a relationship with Oxygen Healthcare Research (O2H) to explore the unique capabilities of a team that spanned the UK and India. I asked O2H to synthesize a series of compounds as part of our Alzheimer's research programme.

During the kick-off meeting I thought that I would need to visit the facility in India however after using the voice and camera technology that was set-up I found that the communication was excellent from the very beginning. Some of the chemistry required that the team in India solved synthesis problems by researching the literature and modifying the routes. They communicated their progress to me on a well presented status report every 2 weeks whilst displaying some highly professional project management documentation which accompanied this. Most importantly, the project was completed on-time in a cost effective manner. The team showed good commitment and the management were very professional in their approach.'

Senexis is a drug development company, dedicated to the discovery of effective treatments for major ageing-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's dementia, type II diabetes and Parkinson's disease. It is now widely believed that the misfolding and aggregation of the amyloid-like proteins underlies the pathologies of these different diseases. Senexis has discovered potent and selective compounds that protect cells and tissues from the toxic forms of amyloid. Senexis is funded by BTG plc and the Wellcome Trust.         O2H profiled in FT Special Report on India and Globalisation
On the 27th Jan 2006, O2H was profiled in an FT special pharmaceuticals report on India and Globalisation by Andrew Jack titled When language gives an industry the edge.
The hours are long and the time difference tough but, shuttling between their offices in Cambridge and Ahmedabad, Sunil and Prashant Shah co-ordinate a fledgling company that is riding India's fast-growing pharmaceuticals wave. Since April 2005, cheap travel, telephony and cameras in their laboratories have allowed the two entrepreneurs to build Oxygen Healthcare into a business marketed from the UK to European and North American biotech clients, with their contract chemistry conducted in Gujarat.         O2H Innovation - Seeing Is Believing
'we, and our clients, feel that operational transparency is very important.' In a bid to grant unprecedented client access to their research facility, O2H have setup 3 internet cameras and a website allowing clients to view their work in progress in their laboratories in what they believe to be the worlds first in the sector. Prashant Shah, Director, commented on the installation. 'With so many of our clients based in Europe and the US we, and our clients, feel that operational transparency is very important. In addition to weekly milestone charts securely posted into our intranet, and direct project team leader access via SKYPE video and voice conferencing we feel we have set new standards in communication and transparency. Our team has an incredible amount of energy, drive and focus and we want our current and future clients to see this at a point of their own choosing. The pan and zoom functions are also a lot of fun!'  If you would like to gain temporary access to view our laboratories in India please click here.

        O2H Masala! Tiffin Lunch
Every quarter O2H brings you a teaspoon of masala from its frontline in India. This quarter highlights the lunch habits of its team in India. There are no sandwiches in front of the computer, fancy restaurants or salads in sight. The team mostly eat from home made tiffins (a light midday meal of rotis, curries, rice, dhal, savouries, and sweets). In groups of 5 or 6 the team congregates in the kitchen and opens their various lovingly prepared delicacies. These delights are generously shared amongst all those present including any hungry visiting clients, guests and Directors!

        O2H at ERBI 2006 - A sweet 1st Birthday Celebration!
O2H will be attending ERBI's 8th Annual BioPartnering Exchange on the 10 - 12 May 2006, Cambridge, UK. If you would like to arrange a meeting please email O2H. The ERBI event also marks the 1st birthday of O2H as an operational company and O2H would be delighted to unofficially share some very unhealthy Indian sweets with you as is traditional on such occasions in India! It is rumoured that a number of the worlds top scientific minds have still not (and may never) recover from the Cobra Beer sponsored company launch at ERBI 2005!
